Playing with the frisbee

Yesterday Luna and I played with the frisbee again. I must say that I am very proud of this little girl! She has the best recall I’ve ever experienced in a dog, especially in such young dogs. She is only 7 months old, and she will almost turn midair when I call her. We have been training a lot on this, though, but to say that dogs will not learn this well without using a shock collar (I’ve heard that one several times) is only showing a lack of knowledge!

We played for about ten minutes before I decided it was enough. It’s important to remember that she’s only 7 months old and that her body can’t handle to much yet. In the same time, she is active anyway, so I know what she can handle. The last week her energy levels have been quite low comparing to her usual self. She’ll be in season very soon, so that must be the cause.

Here are some pictures from yesterday. They’re all taken by John Gjertsen and edited by me:

The spring is here!

Finally! This winter has held a firm grasp on my part of the country (it’s still holding on tight in other parts), but now it seems as the spring is finally here. The snow is melting away more and more each day, and it’s no longer freezing cold outside. I can actually spend time outside without a jacket for the first time in months!

I am actually one of the seemingly few in Norway who loves the winter. I get just as excited every time the first snow is pouring down from the sky. Even so, I do get tired of it. Especially at the end when there’s only ice and more ice around. There’s no fun being outside when all you do is trying to keep balanced while sliding around in every direction. I can’t take Hugin with me in the woods, cause his feet and legs always start to bleed from the icy snow.

Another positive side to the spring is definitely the light. The sun is up from 6 am to 8 pm now, in stead of 9 am to 3 pm. If you live in the north the sun won’t come up at all during the winter. On the other side, it doesn’t set during the summer. At least it does that here.

I am really looking forward to hiking and camping this spring and summer. Luna is going to sleep in a tent for the first time in her life, and I think it will be a wonderful experience!

Straight line to success?

I don’t think many animal trainers would disagree with me when I say that training an animal takes time, patience and a lot of effort. Is it worth it in the end? Yes. You may have to change tactics, but not to give up is the key to success!

ImageI started to think about this on my evening walk today. I experienced a huge step backwards in the loose leash training today. My dogs have lately started walking very nicely when leashed. There’s always a lot of pulling in the beginning, but hey – even I will run to the toilet if I really have to. After they’ve done what they need to do, they are always attentive to whether the leash is tight or loose.

This evening they weren’t. They both pulled with all their strength, not sensing the leash and they did not give me one thought what so ever.

I don’t know what happened. Clearly they were both stressed and excited, but I have no clue what triggered it. My guessing is that it may have been a smell or two or the fact that I expect Luna to come in season very soon.

She is a young dog after all, and her hormones are starting to change her from the little sweet puppy that she is, to a soon-to-be grown up. Hugin is neutered so he’s not getting excited by her smells like I’ve noticed other male dogs have been when around her lately, but he is very easily affected by the stress of other dogs and people.

I am getting a little discouraged every time this happens. This feeling is only lasting for a short while. Just until I’ve thought more about what went wrong. It’s not their fault. If they are unable to focus, they are unable to focus. There’s nothing more I can do about that than to lower my expectations and to make the training easier for them. This may be once in a blue moon-incident, but if not I only need to go back a few steps so I’ll set them up for success!

It is important not to give up just because things don’t go the way we hoped they would. The picture further up explains it in a way words can not. If I just gave up teaching my dogs to walk in a loose leash my arms would be extended till the point where I would look like a gorilla! No thanks.

I want walks to be relaxing and enjoyable for everyone. My dogs will sniff whatever they want to sniff, and I will not be tired from putting my breaks on. Come to think about it: I wouldn’t find training my dogs to be so rewarding if I didn’t come across some difficulties once in a while. I wouldn’t appreciate our goals in the same way if I never had to work for it!

Video: Teaching Luna how to bow

Teaching Luna new tricks is a lot of fun! This was one of the easiest training sessions we’ve ever had. She did just what I wanted immediately, without me having to show her or shape anything!

Introducing the frisbee to Luna

Yesterday I introduced the frisbee to Luna. As my plan for her is disc dogging, I decided it was time to introduce her for the frisbee now. We will of course wait with the serious training and heavy tricks until she’s older, but there’s no problem starting lightly now just to get her used to do something for the frisbee and to get her to love the frisbee as a reward.

The introduction was a huge success, and she chased it immediately. We threw it for about 6-7 minutes before I decided to go home again, and my boyfriend John Gjertsen took many great pictures. The three first are edited by me, and the last one is both taken and edited by him.

Welcome to my blog!

Hello, and welcome to my new blog.

This is my first attempt to have a blog in English, which is not my first language. I hope whoever reads this blog will keep that in mind as I may have several writing mistakes as I go on.

Anyways, this blog will contain dogs and dog training, mainly posts about my own two dogs and their friends, but also dog training in general. I am a fan of clicker training, and I often use the clicker when I train my dogs. However, I do train without it too, using verbal language like «good boy!» to mark when they did something right!

On this blog you will not see choke chains, prong collars, shock collars or any equipment causing pain or discomfort. You will find positive training tips with videos, pictures and explaining texts on how you can teach your dog a new trick or to overcome an issue in your daily life. I find this way not only to be the best, fastest and greatest way of teaching and guiding my dogs to behave as I want them to, but also to be ethical and friendly. My dogs shall work for me because they WANT to, not because I force them to, and since they want to work for me, they do so eagerly!

If you have any questions for me, don’t be afraid to ask! I will answer as best as I can, and if you want me to write a post about something, I will definitely consider it!
